For Charlotte Young, learning sign language is empowering. As the President and co-founder of the Auslan Club at ANU, Young has helped to create a space dedicated to sharing Deaf language and culture.

Established by Young, in conjunction with academic Dr Gemma King and other likeminded students, the ANU Auslan club provides free sign language lessons.

Each member of the club has their own reasons for learning Auslan — including those who have siblings with hearing loss, as well as someone with a desire to be a better swim coach for deaf students.

It only takes a few minutes scrolling through TikTok for the obsession with looking youthful to reach your personal orbit — from claims Gen Z are ageing like “old milk” to children as young as 10 buying expensive anti-ageing creams from Sephora.

While it may be easy to pin this seeming vanity on social media, Associate Professor Neil Jeyasingam, a psychiatrist from ANU, says there is another societal factor at play. Trigger warning: it involves the pandemic.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, frontline workers were called on to make countless life-or-death decisions every day. Sometimes, having to do things they understood to be a requirement of their job, but that went against how they’d act under their own volition.

The profound suffering that can occur when someone is forced to make impossible choices that conflict with their core values has a name: moral injury. And Thomas believes it needs our urgent attention.

Selina Walker, proud Ngunnawal woman, emerging elder, and proud granddaughter of Senior Ngunnawal Elder Aunty Agnes Shea OAM and will deliver the ANU Reconciliation Lecture 2024. 

Selina was awarded 2024 ACT Local Hero and is a Co-Chair of the ACT Reconciliation Council and a member of the Victims of Crime Justice Committee. A reception will be hosted from 5-5.30pm, allowing networking time.

ANUSA will be offering free migration workshops, hosted by qualified lawyers, for students concerned about the recent change in graduation dates to March-April 2025. These workshops will provide guidance on visas, including permanent migration. Whether you need advice on applying for a new visa, your student visa is nearing expiration, or you are interested in exploring visa options after graduation, these sessions are here to help. 

 

Thursday 4 July,6-7pm 

Join us for the memorial lecture in honour of Emeritus Professor Will Steffen, one of Australia’s most influential and respected climate scientists.  

Will left a significant legacy at ANU, as the former Director of ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society, and the Inaugural Director of ANU Climate Institute. The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Professor Dr Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Professor in Earth System Science at the University of Potsdam. 

The Student Safety and Wellbeing Committee advises the Council on managing student safety and wellbeing at the University. Their work aligns with the ANU Strategic Plan and the committee addresses issues such as sexual assault and harassment. The Charter of the Committee provides for:

- Up to three ANU students (diverse in representation; and not members of Council) at least one of whom must be a resident in ANU student accommodation at the time of appointment.

- Appointments being made for 'up to one year' with possibility of reappointment.

To facilitate the appointment, the University is pleased to call on behalf of the Council for EOls from ANU students who wish to be considered for appointment to the Committee.

What is the role of a member of this Committee of Council?

Members, bound by the , represent the interests of the University, first and foremost, in order to assist Council to make decisions about student safety and wellbeing as part of its responsibility to govern the ANU.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities of the Committee are listed in Section 5 of the .

Eligibility & Process

The opportunity to join the Committee as a member is open for any currently enrolled ANU student. Students who wish to nominate are invited to address their EOI to the Chancellor of the ANU by email to director.governance@anu.edu.au. The email should include:

- A Curriculum Vitae (no more than two pages);

- One page pitch explaining suitability for the role with reference to the Committee’s objectives; and

- A note that indicates whether they are currently residing in a student residence on campus.

Applications will be open from Tuesday 2 July and close at COB on Tuesday 16 July 2024.

While discussions with community childcare providers are ongoing, we have provided an updated summary of the project's currant status and information on when you can expect further updates.

The 2024 ANU Student Research Conference (SRC) is now accepting 250-word abstract submissions from students based on coursework research completed at ANU. 

The SRC is the university's annual research conference for undergraduate (including Honours) and Masters (coursework) students. It is a multidisciplinary event that invites students from all academic disciplines to present their research. The conference also features a variety of workshops and other events designed to inspire and engage student attendees with research-related conversations, initiatives, and opportunities at the undergraduate level and beyond. 

Submission closes Wednesday 31 July 2024 at 11:59pm.

By putting someone forward, your nomination shows the efforts of a fellow Â鶹´«Ã½AV have not gone unnoticed. It only takes one nomination to elevate their voice, help them access more support or give them the recognition they deserve. There are four award categories – Â鶹´«Ã½AV of the Year, Senior Â鶹´«Ã½AV of the Year, Young Â鶹´«Ã½AV of the Year and Australia’s Local Hero.

The University is currently seeking a nurse practitioner and doctors to join the ANU Medical Centre to provide health services for students. It is key that applicants have a strong interest in caring for students and young adults. Applications for Nurse Practitioner will close on 14 July 2024 and recruitment for doctors is ongoing.
