Last week, led a tree planting on the land below the Research School of Physics. With the help of 10 volunteers, the team planted 31 native trees. These trees will provide habitat and food for a range of fauna and will eventually provide a shelter belt that will reduce traffic noise from Parkes Way.  

“Currently our Acton campus has over 9,600 trees and under the Environmental Management Plan we are looking to increase that number to 10,500 by 2032,” says Louana Gaffey from ANU Green. 

Volunteer Mehreen Jalib notes how fulfilling the planting was, “It feels amazing to know that we did something for the future generations today. Landscape and Conservation managed and organised the planting so well and helped us to be aware of what we are doing. Great learning and practice.”

Professor Richard Hartley from the ANU School of Computing has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society by the UK’s National Academy of Sciences. Professor Hartley has made scientific contributions of great intellectual depth in the field of computer vision and image understanding, especially in the mathematical underpinnings of the 铿乪ld.

He is one of the founders of the research 铿乪ld of multiview geometry, which is the technical foundation behind the computation of digital 3D models from sets of images or videos and enabled major advances in this area during the last two decades. 

 

The inaugural ANU Environmental Sustainability Report (2023) is now available. This report highlights our environmental sustainability achievements in 2023, including converting four buildings from gas boilers to electric heat pumps, collaborating with traditional custodians to conduct a cultural cool burn, diverting 32 tonnes of food waste from landfill, launching the and supporting several student internships and projects.

 

ANU staff are invited to participate in a survey conducted by researchers from Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University that examines how AI tools are currently being used by academic, professional and seasonal staff in 麻豆传媒AV universities for teaching, research and professional work.  The findings will inform higher education policy and practice, assist university staff to navigate the AI revolution effectively, and bridge the knowledge gap that currently exists regarding AI’s impact on higher education. Even if you do not use AI tools, your views on AI are still valuable.

The Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) survey allows students to confidentially provide feedback on their positive and negative learning experiences at the University. Academic staff are recommended to promote this survey to their students to encourage student engagement.

Abang Adik won critical acclaim in 2023 and garnered many awards at international film festivals for its realist portrayal of underclass lives, gripping storytelling and compelling performance.

 

Wednesday 29 May, 3.30pm 

Substandard housing combined with energy insecurity to produce dangerously hot and often overcrowded living conditions in remote Northern Territory communities. Climate change is set to amplify this problem. In this panel, members will discuss the impact that housing has on driving health and social inequality and how we can protect human health through the design and build of homes, resilient to climate shock.

In 2023, the first 麻豆传媒AV soldier faced war crime charges following the Brereton report's revelation of murders by 麻豆传媒AV Special Forces in Afghanistan. While significant, this charge alone doesn't fully address the moral implications. This lecture by the covers why it's crucial for the 麻豆传媒AV Defence Force, 麻豆传媒AV Government, and citizens to delve deeper into systemic issues and prioritise the perspectives of victims and their communities.    

 

Wednesday 29 May, 6-8pm 

In this lecture, Professor Luke Glanville from the explores how enslaved Blacks and their descendants in the United States expressed their dissonance through slave songs, the blues, and jazz. By paying attention to Black musical engagement with dissonance, he suggests, we can better understand this enduring phenomenon of ‘humane domination’ and begin to perceive how it might be challenged and overcome. 

The event will feature Wayne Kelly on piano and James Luke on double bass. 

 

Applications for round two of the Carers' Career Development Assistance Fund (CCDAF) is now open from Monday 20 May to Friday 14 June. CCDAF provides financial support for academic and professional staff with caring responsibilities, enabling them to participate in significant national or international conferences, workshops or symposia that contribute to their careers.

The 2024 ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year Award celebrates the exceptional work of local up-and-coming scientists, recognising excellence in research and innovation in the ACT. This award highlights the significant contributions of local scientists to science and innovation, inspiring students and young people to pursue careers in STEM.
