ANU graduate and biologist WELI knows more about kangaroos than most. He has hopped to the number one spot in the 2024 Dance Your PhD global contest with his quirky submission, Kangaroo Time (Club Edit). 

Dance your PhD is an annual contest where researchers around the world are tasked with explaining their PhD in the simplest terms through song and dance.  

Kangaroo Time melds a variety of dance styles from classical ballet, twerking, urban street dance and Brazilian dancing styles to reflect the variations in kangaroo personality.

Marrying art and science, Professor Simon Haberle from the ANU School of Â鶹´«Ã½AV, History and Language has just embarked on, in partnership with multi-award-winning artist Jennifer Kemarre Martiniello: The Stories Beneath My Ancestors Footprints.  

 

 

Professor Mark Howden, Professor Hilary Bambrick and Associate Professor Emma Aisbett gave evidence at the public hearing for the Climate Change Amendment Bill 2023 Inquiry.  

If achieved, this amendment would enshrine a duty of care towards future generations and require lawmakers to consider the health and wellbeing of current and future generations in decisions that have environmental impacts and climate change risks.

A renowned expert on the Indo-Pacific, Dr Frédéric Grare has joined the ANU National Security College as a Senior Research Fellow as part of an expert program sponsored by the government of France.  

During his time at NSC Dr Grare will examine geopolitics and maritime security in the Indian Ocean. 

“This is a problem for Australia and this is a problem for France... We are collectively responsible for protecting our national security – and we have to work together,” says Professor Rory Medcalf, Head of the NSC.

Thursday 14 March, 4-5.30pm 

China’s quick expansion in the developing world, in particular the Sub-Sahara African countries, has spawned public debates and generated new fields of scholarship over the past couple of decades. In this talk, Dr Liang Chen, a visiting fellow at the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Centre on China in the World examines whether China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects and private investment contribute to the industrial development in Africa through the lens of technology transfer. 

 

Saturday 16 March, 2-3pm 

Enrich your eardrums this Saturday as Taipei-based jazz collective Zy the Way ?? uses poems from the ancient collection of poetry Book of Songs (Shijing ??) to seamlessly blend 3000-year-old ancient Chinese poetry and original jazz. ANU College of Asia and the Pacific Postdoctoral Fellow Annie Ren will provide translations and exegesis of the poems in between songs.

Join the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific for its inaugural lecture in their Professorial Lecture Series as Professor McComas Taylor explores the captivating world of the epic poem Mahabharata. Discover the epic's enduring influence across cultures, from ancient manuscripts to modern media, and uncover its profound impact on Indian culture and beyond.

Step into the future as the ANU School of Music explores the new and future directions of jazz. Take part in a two-day symposium examining present and potential transformations within the genre through a series of presentations, performances, and social dinners.
