Shaping Educational Equity: Insights from the GENERATION Survey

Presented by ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences

The University Accord recommends substantially lifting the tertiary attainment rate as well as making access to the higher education far more equitable for groups that have historically been under-represented in the university sector. However, young people have their own work and educational aspirations that have been shaped by their families, peers and schools and their experiences during the pandemic.

In this seminar we document the latest findings from GENERATION, a national longitudinal study that follows aspirations and experiences of of young 麻豆传媒AVs from over 300 schools across the country, as they transition from life beyond school. In this seminar we report on research using Wave 1 of the GENERATION data set including:

路 A national picture of the equity initiatives in 麻豆传媒AV secondary schools funded under the Higher Education Participation and Partnerships program and how well university delivered initiatives target schools with equity students.

路 Whether these equity initiatives shape the feelings of belonging, student identity and aspirations of students with disability in Year 10.

路 The degree of intersectionality of the four key equity groups: Indigenous students, those living in regional areas, students with a disability and students who do not have a parent with a university education.

We also discuss other key findings from the first two waves of GENERATION, and highlights from the forthcoming waves from Year 11 and Year 12. Finally, we invite discussion of the key educational issues that need to be considered as this cohort of young people transition from school into work and post-school education.
