Rights, Relationships and Respect Evaluation
Presented by ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences
In 2023, the ANU Respectful Relationships Unit (RRU) launched the Rights, Relationships and Respect (RRR) program as part of their enduring vision for a violence-free campus by 2026. The program targeted at incoming students included a compulsory online module, and a pilot curriculum of workshops in select residential halls. Both the online and in-person elements emphasised individual agency and responsibility, as well as the systemic power imbalances and social norms that drive violence.
Recognising the importance of evaluation, POLIS was engaged as a partner to measure the implementation and effectiveness of the program. We drew on a range of methods and sources of data to explore the different facets of student learning and engagement. These included a post-implementation survey, analysis of learner responses to module activities, interviews with student participants, peer educators and RRU staff, workshop observations, and analysis of participant views collected during the workshops using an online engagement tool. Our findings provide significant insight into student knowledge, motivations, cultural dynamics, and the challenges of maintaining participation across diverse student cohorts. These themes are discussed and recommendations provided within the context of the continued work of the RRU, and emerging requirements under the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence.
