Increasing the effectiveness of Lao bank regulation: can smart regulation make a difference?

Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

In the quest for more effective bank regulation in Laos, Sithong Chanthasouk has researched whether smart regulation, a form of regulatory pluralism, could make a difference.

In the quest for more effective bank regulation in Laos, Sithong has researched whether smart regulation, a form of regulatory pluralism conceived in a capitalist setting, could make a difference in a socialist setting. Through the perspectives of key stakeholders, the research has identified the main characteristics of Lao bank regulation that may have implications for the applicability of smart regulation in the Lao banking context. This suggests new regulatory insights from applying well-established theory to new environment, particularly developing economies in South East Asia.

This seminar is Sithong's final presentation of his doctoral candidature.
