2024 ANU Pacific Institute Annual Lecture

Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

Navigating Pacific futures: Intersecting traditional knowledge with contemporary challenges for sustainable development

The Solomon Islands National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau will outline thoughts on how to harness the rich cultural heritage and innovative spirit of the Pacific in the ANU Pacific Institute’s Annual Lecture. The Pacific Islands, with their vast oceans and rich cultural heritage, face unique challenges in navigating the complexities of sustainable development in a rapidly globalising world. This lecture explores the intersection of traditional knowledge and contemporary challenges, focusing on how the wisdom of our ancestors can guide us toward a resilient and sustainable future. The discussion traverses key areas including traditional governance, education and capacity building, environmental stewardship, economic innovation, and regional cooperation. Central to the discourse is the Solomon Islands National University's (SINU) innovative approach to education through place-based learning and the establishment of the Center for Islands Futures as well as regional cooperation and international engagement.

Audience members will have the opportunity for a Q&A session with SINU Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau, followed by light refreshments.
