Knots and Primes – What do primes look like? a public lecture with Mathematical Sciences Research Visitor Masanori Morishita from the Kyushu University, Japan.

Presented by ANU College of Science

A public lecture with Mathematical Sciences Research Visitor Masanori Morishita from the Kyushu University.

Abstract

Prime numbers are among the most basic objects in mathematics. It has been a fundamental problem in mathematics to pursue the (geometric) picture of primes â€“ what primes look like, just as it has been a fundamental problem in physics to pursue the (geometric) picture of elementary particles – what elementary particles look like. I will talk about the history of development and revolutions of mathematics, according to the changes of the picture of primes.

About the speaker

s currently a Professor at the Department of Mathematics, Kyushu University, Japan. Specialising in Arithmetic Topology.
